Background:
"SJ" is 3
years old and has a Down's syndrome. She is eager to communicate but has a severe
language delay and gets very frustrated. She has hypermobile joints and as a result
is delayed with her mobility. Her mum is a professional working woman who is now
ready to return to work full-time. Solution:
Following
a home visit, it was agreed that although "SJ's" speech and language
delay was of some concern, that someone with experience with physiotherapy would
be the most valuable at this stage in her development. A
special needs nanny was identified who had a background with physiotherapy. She
was happy to undertake a Makaton course to be able to also assist SJ's" communication.
The family funded this course and soon "SJ" was enjoying basic signing.
The nanny and mum devised a daily routine incorporating physiotherapy exercises,
eating and drinking techniques as advised by the speech and language therapist.
Makaton was used throughout the days activities which also included arranging
playdates with other children. The
nanny works full-time (45 hours a week), Monday to Friday. She works on a daily
basis, travelling to the family home each day. |
