| Background:
The
family have three children aged 10 months, 3 and 4. The eldest, "F"
is a bright little boy who has cerebral palsy and needs all assistance. Mum finds
it impossible to manage all three children on her own. "F" has started
a nursery school where he has a one to one support.
Solution: A
Mother's Help, "K" is identified. She is younger and less experienced
than the average special needs nanny, but has a sibling with additional needs,
so has a very good understanding. "K" works as a live-in Mother's Help,
she has her own room and shares the bathroom with the children. As a Mother's
Help she does not have sole charge of any of the children, as the name implies,
she assists mum. The journey to the nursery is made easier as "K" can
take responsibility for getting "F" ready and push his wheelchair.
"K"
will be in a position to have periods of sole charge when both parties are comfortable
and she understands the needs of the children. "K" assists with all
aspects of childcare, including domestic tasks relating to the children. This
is an ideal situation - the family get an extra pair of hands at a lower rate
than an experienced nanny, and the Mother's Help gains valuable skills for the
future. Mum is able to spend one to one time with the children individually, while
"K" entertains the other two children.
