We also helped families who found themselves in difficult situations, such as parents who themselves had a disability or acquired injury, or bereavement or illness in the family.
We still work with many of the families we initially helped when we first started, indeed we still work with many families we helped several years ago - Chessie, Toby, Rachel, Jojo, Benji, Max, Nicky, Theo and Sam to name just a few.
Over the years we have been privileged to meet some amazing people: parents and other family members, professionals such as case managers and social workers, nannies, enablers and others we have placed, and of course the children and young people.
We made the decision to visit every family wherever they are in the UK, and it was the best decision we could have made; there's nothing like meeting a child or young person in their own home to get a real sense of who they are and who will be a great match for them (and their family), not only in terms of experience, but also personality. (It's also the part of our work we like the most!)
Suffice to say we have met some amazing children along the way - children who certainly haven't had the easiest start in life and some who continue to struggle with the hand they have been dealt, but all have something pretty special about them. To meet a child and find them a great nanny/ buddy is very satisfying, to hear a few years later that the nanny or buddy you placed has really helped that person's life is the best.
Having a child with additional needs is never easy, and as all families know, there are ups and downs and the stresses and worries can be enormous, but it has been a privilege to meet some amazing families, families who show courage, commitment and dedication in the face of those stresses, families determined to giving their child the best life they can - and very often with a big dose of humour and joy! To still be in contact with so many families over the years is very satisfying for the people who work at SNAP (More on them later).
It goes without saying, that none of this would be possible without the fantastic people we place, people who show a commitment and dedication that often goes well beyond what is expected for a job. Just like the families we still know, there are many nannies, enablers, buddies etc we are still working with. For us it is doubly satisfying; to place someone in a great job and to help their career development.
SNAP has always been about building and maintaining relationships, and over the years we have worked with some very dedicated professionals, and in particular case managers. Their support and help has been incredibly helpful over the years and enabled us to build and maintain relationships with many families.
A big thank you to all staff who have worked at SNAP. We have been very lucky to have had some fantastic people at SNAP who have made it all possible: Judy (AKA Mrs P!), Amy, Leanne, Janet, Alex, Anna, Rosie, Janine, Kirsty, Ruth, Linnet, Kim and Jackie.
Last but not least, to Camilla who was our motivation to start SNAP.
Here's to the next 10...
